Mauro Balata is of counsel to Carnelutti Studio Legale Associato. His practice focuses on corporate, enforcements, real estate, capital markets and tort liability issues. He is the managing partner of an established law firm in Rome and has a long track record working for the top management of FIGC (Italian Football’s governing body) as a member of its Prosecuting Attorney Office. Since 1990 he has tracked the most important events that have polluted and scandalised the world of professional football, being awarded the Stella al Merito prize by CONI (bronze in 2012, silver in 2016) and later the title of Cavaliere al Merito della Repubblica (2014).
In 2018, he was awarded the Stella al Merito in the social merits category, directly from the Antimafia National Public Prosecutor Cafiero De Raho, "for the ethical and innovative values with which he pursues the objective of structuring a professional football system based on legality, full disclosure, sustainability and a shared approach". He also received the national prize "Sportilia" (C.Viola memorial) for "being capable of balancing discipline, honesty and wisdom with ethical and sports values" and, the "Maestrelli" prize for fair play.
He taught for several years at the postgraduate legal training school in Rome and was a member of the Scientific Committee of the National and International Arbitration Chamber of the Rome bar of lawyers. He is member of the constitutional law exam committee at the University of Siena, where he is also professor at the postgraduate course for managers of sports clubs, and member of the Sports Law Committee of the National Bar Council.
He was elected president of the Italian second tier division clubs, Lega B, on 23 November 2018 after acting as Commissioner for two months in which he led the association towards its unanimous approval of its new articles of association. One of the targets achieved as head of the association is the historic reduction of the second tier division back to 20 teams, restoring the Lega B structure to its 2002/03 season format. Mauro obtained his J.D. from Università of Sassari, in 1988.
He was admitted to the Italian Bar in 1992, and has rights of audience/representation before the Italian High Court.
He is fluent in English and Spanish, in addition to his native Italian.
